Analyzing the Artistic Awakening and Narrative Craft: Exploring Psychological and Socio-Cultural Influences in James Joyce's A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man
The objective of this study is to analyze the narrative style of Joyce used in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. The research is qualitative in nature and utilizes Bakhtin (1981) Bildungsroman Framework which focuses on the development of the protagonist, typically from youth to adulthood, emphasizing personal growth, self-discovery, and social integration. It is particularly relevant to James Joyce's A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, as the novel chronicles Stephen Dedalus's journey toward artistic and intellectual autonomy. He has portrayed the character of Stephen Dedalus and his journey towards artistic identity as well as self-discovery by deploying various techniques as symbolic imagery, stream-of-consciousness, and epiphany to show broader socio-cultural constraints of early 20th-century Irish society and internal conflict of Stephen. The findings reveal the transformative moments that define his artistic vocation, emphasizing the importance of personal insight in the creative process. These moments of clarity demonstrate Joyce’s belief in the necessity of introspection and realism for the artist.
