Exploring the Lived Experiences of Hospitalized Individuals with Substance Use Disorder and Co-occurring Depression: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis

This study aimed to explore the cognitive and emotional experiences of hospitalized individuals with substance use disorder (SUD) and co-occurring depression. Despite increasing research on dual diagnoses, little is known about how individuals experience hospitalization and treatment for both conditions. Eight participants, aged 22 tso 57 years, diagnosed with both SUD and depression, were recruited from hospitals in Multan, Pakistan. Semi-structured interviews were conducted, and data were analyzed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Four super-ordinate themes emerged: (1) Triggers and pathways to treatment, (2) Impact of addiction and depression on daily life, (3) Treatment experience and response to care, and (4) Hope, motivation, and recovery. These themes shed light on the psychological, emotional, and social challenges faced by individuals with dual diagnoses and highlight the complexities of managing both conditions during hospitalization. The results underscore the need for combined care approaches where both SUD and mental health disorders are treated concurrently. Understanding the lived experiences of these individuals can inform better treatment strategies, improve patient outcomes, and reduce stigma. Keywords: substance use disorder, depression, co-occurring disorders, hospitalization, integrated care, recovery, stigma.
