Evaluation of electroless plating on magnesium alloy micro-arc oxidation layer with different electroless Ni-P plating baths
This study investigates the effects of different electroless nickel-phosphorus (Ni-P) plating baths on the micro-arc oxidation (MAO) layer of AZ31 magnesium alloy . The research compares the corrosion resistance and adhesion properties of coatings using carbonate-based and sulfuric acid-based nickel formulations. The carbonate-based nickel formulation showed better corrosion resistance and adhesion, while the sulfuric acid-based formulation had uneven distribution and interface erosion. This study highlights the formation of NaMgF 3 nanoparticles during the initial stages of nickel deposition, which affects the coating's density and adhesion. The findings provide valuable insights for enhancing the performance of MAO and electroless nickel deposition, with potential industrial applications in improving the durability and functionality of magnesium alloys. • The interface phenomenon of electroless plating on AZ31 micro-arc oxidation layer is discussed. • Carbonate-based nickel formulation demonstrated superior corrosion resistance and adhesion. • Sulfuric-based formulation was found to disrupt the dense layer of MAO. • Cross-section can demonstrate the penetration of Ni-P coatings into MAO in different formulations. • The nuanced analysis of different formulations offers valuable insights for coating performance.
