A Comparative Analysis of European Sustainability Reporting Practices: The Role of ESG Standards and SDG's in Enhancing Effectiveness

Objectives: This paper examines the interoperability between Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) standards and the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS), focusing on their role in improving corporate transparency and accountability, aligned with the European Green Deal's objectives. Theoretical Framework: Grounded in the European Green Deal and sustainability reporting paradigms, the study explores the integration of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) standards and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in shaping corporate practices, emphasizing risk management, financial access, corporate organization, and audit frameworks. Method: A structured literature review is conducted, clustering themes into four categories: risk management, financial access, corporate organization, and audit processes. Both qualitative and quantitative approaches are employed to identify trends and best practices within ESG reporting and regulatory environments. Results and Discussion: Findings reveal significant challenges in regulatory fragmentation, which hinder operational efficiency across jurisdictions. However, there is a positive trend toward the harmonization of ESG frameworks, enhancing financial stability and reducing agency costs. Integrating ESG criteria improves corporate transparency and market perceptions while fostering sustainability. Research Implications: The evolving regulatory landscape presents challenges to the generalizability of findings. Nevertheless, the study offers actionable recommendations to promote regulatory convergence, supporting sustainable business practices and corporate accountability. Originality/Value: By adopting a novel clustering method, this paper provides an in-depth analysis of the interplay between European financial reporting standards and ESG frameworks. It contributes to understanding how harmonized regulations can facilitate sustainable corporate governance and transparency, offering insights for policymakers, managers, and stakeholders.
