Endoscopic management of stapes fixation due to stapedial tendon calcification
We present a unique case of a patient with conductive hearing loss who was found to have stapes fixation due to calcification of the stapedial tendon in the setting of longstanding chronic otitis media, tympanosclerosis, and tympanic membrane perforation. Endoscopic tympanoplasty was performed with lysis of the calcified stapedial tendon resulting in mobilization of the stapes and significant improvement in conductive hearing loss. This case report describes the presentation, management, and surgical techniques utilized in this case. • Tympanosclerosis is a common sequela of chronic otitis media. • Tympanosclerosis can involve all middle ear structures, including the stapes tendon. • Conductive hearing loss due to stapes tendon fixation can be managed by tendon lysis.
