The Ichnofacies from the Upper Visean of the Eastern Jebilet, Marrakech, Morocco
For the first time, a detailed ichnological analysis has been carried out on the Paleozoic terrains of the Eastern Jebilet, a Hercynian mountain range (north of Marrakech-Morocco). The upper Visean sediments at Kodiat Oulad Abid and Kodiat Sidi Boumedaine are dominated by sandstone facies, conglomeratic facies and schist facies. Some eight fossil trace species have been systematically described, including Archaeonossa fossulata, gordia, Helmintopsis, Arthrophycus, Rhizoliths, Skolithos, Planolites and Arenicolites. Sedimentological and ichnological data suggest shallow marginal marine environments. These newly discovered traces enable us to better reconstruct the paleoenvironments of the Eastern Jebilet in Morocco during the Paleozoic, and broaden the paleogeographic distribution.
