An Analysis of the Legal Framework for Addressing Banditry in Northwestern Nigeria: Challenges and Prospects

Banditry has become a significant security challenge in Northwestern Nigeria, threatening lives, livelihoods and regional stability. This study critically examines the legal framework designed to address banditry, focusing on its effectiveness, gaps and implementation challenges. By analyzing secondary data from legal statutes, government reports and scholarly articles, the research identifies key weaknesses in the enforcement of existing laws, such as inadequate institutional capacity, lack of political will and socio-economic factors. The study also explores the role of regional and community-based approaches in complementing formal legal mechanisms. Recommendations are provided to strengthen the legislative and institutional frameworks for combating banditry effectively. The findings aim to contribute to policy discourse and offer a pathway toward sustainable security in the region.
