Experimental Comparison of Weight and Cost for MOH and Amorphous Transformer Cores
In transformer design, the choice of material for the transformer core is critical because it directly affects efficiency, size, and weight. Amorphous steel and MOH cold-rolled grain-oriented are two common materials used for transformer cores to minimize core losses. Amorphous steel has lower core losses and improved energy efficiency as compared to other traditional materials. The density and weight may differ significantly from MOH cold-rolled grain-oriented steel, which is a high-performance silicon steel with optimized magnetic properties. This study compares the weight of two different core materials (amorphous steel and MOH steel) used in transformer cores based on their magnetic properties, density, and overall performance. The results show that the core losses in the amorphous material are low, which can lead to higher efficiency. However, the weight of the amorphous material is higher compared to MOH steel. The difference in transformer material can have a significant impact on the overall transformer's design, affecting not only the physical dimensions but also the overall cost. The results will help transformer designers to evaluate the importance of material selection in transformer design for balancing efficiency, weight, and cost considerations to meet operational requirements.
