Evaluating Energy Management: A Comparative Analysis of Smart Meter Versus State-of-the-art Measurement Devices

This paper provides a comparative analysis of a smart meter and a state-of-the-art measurement device for the use in residential Home Energy Management Systems. It evaluates the impact different meters have on Home Energy Management accuracy and effectiveness, emphasizing that standard smart meters deliver their measured values with a bigger time delay compared to state-of-the-art meters. The study explores how these delays in data acquisition affect energy management but also demonstrates through 210 hours of laboratory experiments, that energy management can be efficiently achieved using a smart meter alone, eliminating the need for additional measurement devices to perform effective energy management. The findings offer practical insights for the use of standard digital electrical meters in Home Energy Management applications.
