Benchmark for AC-DC Hybrid System with High Penetration of Renewables

As the rising integration of renewable energy and the increase of electronic devices deployment, power systems around the world are undergoing significant transformations. Due to the reverse distribution of energy and load, as well as geographical diversity, China’s power system has developed distinct scenarios compared to those of Western countries. In these varying scenarios, traditional stability issues related to rotor angle, voltage, and frequency have become prominent. Additionally, in the context of a new power system with a high penetration of power electronic devices. These stability issues necessitate higher standards for the authenticity, rationality, and representativeness of benchmark test system. This paper, based on actual grid topology and data, constructs the CSEE-500, an electromechanical transient simulation test system of China Electric Power Research Institute, suitable for studying stability issues including rotor angle, voltage, and frequency stability. The CSEE-500 not only facilitates the study of rotor angle stability scenarios but also enables the investigation of high-frequency, low-frequency, and ultra-low-frequency oscillation stability scenarios, as well as voltage stability scenarios involving multiple DC infeed points and large-scale distributed photovoltaic integration. Furthermore, by adjusting operating conditions, this test system allows for the examination of the interactive impacts and cascading failures in interconnected regional power grids. In these scenarios of renewable energy exceeds 50% penetration. This test system provides a fundamental platform for stability analysis and control research, aiding researchers across different fields to study and develop new power system analysis and control technologies to verify their accuracy and effectiveness.
