An Enhanced Synchronization Approach by Combining PMF-FFT and Improved Costas Loop for DSSS

In wireless communication systems, the synchronization of the receiver is critical to the system performance. Traditional methods usually carry out the frequency offset estimation and carrier synchronization separately. However, these approaches would result in limited performance at high dynamics or low signal-to-noise ratios (SNR). In this paper, a novel method is proposed which combines the Partial Matched Filter-Fast Fourier yransform (PMF-FFT) and the improved Costas loop for efficient synchronizing. The PMF-FFT provides more accurate and fast frequency offset estimation by modeling the spectral matrix with the FFT transform and the PMF, which enhances the robustness to frequency offset. Due to the improved Costas loop, the performances of the carrier synchronization and the bit error rate (BER) are significantly improved under low SNR conditions. The simulations show that the proposed method has better synchronization tracking speed and stability.
