Comparison of the Operating Economy of SVC and SVG based on Accurate Dynamic Losses Analysis

The losses calculation model for reactive power compensation devices in substations is relatively crude. It is based solely on the rated losses parameters provided by the equipment manufacturers, which makes it difficult to accurately reflect the losses of reactive power compensation devices under actual operating conditions. It is also challenging to fully understand the variation of losses under various operational strategies. To address this issue, this paper discusses two widely used reactive power compensation devices in substations—SVC and SVG, and proposes dynamic losses models for both SVC and SVG. Simulation is conducted in Simulink. It is demonstrated that the accurate dynamic operation losses can more realistically reflect the losses of reactive power compensation devices and provide data support for formulating operational strategies, compared to traditional calculation methods.
