Enhancing Signal Amplification for Optical Communication using Nanowires Cladding Erbium-Doped Waveguide

The research on enhancing the signal amplification of erbium-doped waveguide by silver nanowires aims to address the large size of current fiber amplifiers, which is a consequence of using long fibers as gain media. This hinders their integration with transmitters and receivers. By integrating silver nanowires with optical signal amplifying materials, this study explores the possibility of reducing gain medium length to achieve miniaturization of optical amplifiers, providing a reference for developing short-length, high-gain, miniaturized optical amplifiers for optical communication. After modeling and programming calculations, it was found that the maximum gain of an erbium-doped waveguide amplifier coated with silver nanowires reaches 48 dB, significantly higher than the 39 dB before coating. These results indicate that coating with silver nanowires can enhance the signal amplification of erbium-doped waveguides while also keeping the gain medium length.
