A Compact LNA with Dual-Path Noise-Canceling and Gain Enhancement for 5G Wireless Applications

This paper presents a compact low-noise-amplifier (LNA) employed dual-path noise-canceling and gain enhancement techniques. The LNA is composed of one cascode stage in combination with one common-source (CS) stage. The triple-coil transformer (TR<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</inf>) and dual-coil transformer (TR<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">3</inf>) are used to provide noise-cancelling path and gain boosting. Implemented in TSMC 65-nm CMOS technology, the LNA consumes a DC power of 12 mW under a 1 V supply. The amplifier achieves a 16.7 dB peak gain with a 3-dB bandwidth from 25.2 GHz to 30.5 GHz. The optimum noise figure (NF) is 2.77 dB. The LNA occupies very compact chip area of only 0.08mm2.

Abstract

This paper presents a compact low-noise-amplifier (LNA) employed dual-path noise-canceling and gain enhancement techniques. The LNA is composed of one cascode stage in combination with one common-source (CS) stage. The triple-coil transformer (TR<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</inf>) and dual-coil transformer (TR<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">3</inf>) are used to provide noise-cancelling path and gain boosting. Implemented in TSMC 65-nm CMOS technology, the LNA consumes a DC power of 12 mW under a 1 V supply. The amplifier achieves a 16.7 dB peak gain with a 3-dB bandwidth from 25.2 GHz to 30.5 GHz. The optimum noise figure (NF) is 2.77 dB.
