An Ultra-Wideband Folded Monopole Antenna with Low Profile for Partial Discharge Detection

In this paper, an ultra-wideband folded monopole antenna with vertical polarization is proposed for partial discharge detection. The antenna incorporates a top loading and four grounded pins for impedance matching and maintaining a low profile. The radiator size of the antenna is 0.3λ<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">0</inf> × 0.3λ<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">0</inf> X 0.107λ<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">0</inf>(where λ<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">0</inf> is the wavelength corresponding to the lowest frequency). The measured results show that the proposed antenna has an ultra-wide impedance bandwidth of 157.7% for a reflection coefficient ≤ -10 dB, ranging from 0.36 GHz to 3.05 GHz, meeting the frequency-band requirement for partial discharge detection. The antenna achieves a realized gain ranging from 0.4 to 7.2 dBi. It also exhibits quasi-omnidirectional far-field radiation patterns.
