Sustainable Potential of Renewable Energies in the Brazilian Northeast

Objective: The aim of this paper is to investigate the potential for renewable energy generation in the Northeast region of Brazil, seeking to enhance its contribution to the national energy matrix. Theoretical Framework: The Brazilian Northeast, with its abundance of natural resources, stands out as a promising region for the development of renewable energies, particularly wind and solar. In the context of a global energy transition and carbon emission reduction, Brazil sees the Northeast as a significant opportunity to meet the growing energy demand sustainably. Method: For this analysis, a bibliographic review was conducted using data from official sources such as the National Electric Energy Agency, the National Electric System Operator, and the Brazilian Atlases of Wind and Solar Energy Potential. Results and Discussion: The results indicate a significant growth in wind and solar energy generation, although still below the installed capacity. With a favorable climate and potential comparable to that of major powers, the Northeast presents strategic opportunities to expand its participation in the country's energy matrix. Research Implications: The Northeast emerges as a strategic area for expanding renewable energies in Brazil, requiring incentives and infrastructure improvements to optimize the use of wind and solar energy, attract investments, and strengthen the country’s sustainable economy. Originality/Value: This study is innovative in its specific analysis of the renewable potential of the Northeast, integrating data on capacity and climate, and offers a strategic perspective for policies and investments, highlighting the region as essential in Brazil's energy transition.
