Altruism and Teachers’ Performance in Private Secondary School in Iganga District Uganda
The objective of this study was to analyze the relationship between altruism and teachers’ performance in private secondary schools in Iganga District, Uganda. A cross-sectional survey design coupled with a mixed-methods approach was adopted. The population and sample were selected from four schools. The total population of the study comprised 88 participants, including four (4) head teachers and 84 teachers with administrative responsibilities. A total sample of 88 respondents was involved, selected via simple random sampling and census inquiry, respectively. Data collection involved interviews with head teachers and a questionnaire completed by teachers. Quality control for the questionnaire was ensured through the computation of a content validity index (0.84), a reliability index using Cronbach's alpha (0.86), and pilot interviews with colleagues to validate the interview guide. Descriptive data analysis was conducted using means and standard deviations, while inferential analysis employed the Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient. Qualitative data were analyzed through content analysis. The key finding, in line with the study objective, indicated a positive, significant, and strong relationship between altruism and teachers’ performance, as evidenced by the Pearson product-moment correlation analysis. This research implies that regulations and school principals should encourage teachers to engage in tasks that demonstrate concern for others.
