A Study on the “Dissonance” of Gu Ja-woon’s a printed version poetry collection
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the publication period of 『Dissonce(불협화음)』 of Gu Ja-woon’s poetry collection newly discovered and the consciousness of the Gu Ja-woon revealed in this collection. First of all, 『Dissonce』 is estimated to have been published approximately between 1963 and 1966. The reason is as follows. First, poems with a strong critical attitude toward political reality were included. Second, poems about the Busan experience, that is, poems written about the sea, were included. Third, many of the poems included in 『Dissonce』 overlap in their creation period with the poems included in 『Complete Modern Korean Literature 18 : 52 Poems』 published in January 1967. Meanwhile, Gu Ja-woon was evaluated as a pure, traditional, and oriental lyric poet in the 1950s. However, after going through April 19 and May 16, he transformed into a poet who participated in reality. 『Dissonance』 is a collection of poems that shows this mental change very clearly. In some of the poems included in this collection, Gu Ja-woon even expresses anti-Americanism, which was taboo at the time. In addition, 『Dissonance』 is expected to be helpful in reconstruct the history of Korean poetry in the 1960s. After the May 16 military coup in 1961, writer were forced to be imprisoned or prepared to die when dealing with the themes of ‘anti-American, anti-imperial, anti-capital’. However, Gu Ja-woon, although it is a printed version, has publicly published works that dealt with topics such as ‘anti-Americanism, anti-imperialism, and anti-capitalism’. This can be said to be a very meaningful event in the history of poetry in the 1960s.
