Stabilization of an electro-energetic system by pole placement in observer sliding mode and LQR

In this article, a stabilizer for an electro-energetic system (PSS) is used to dampen the oscillations of the network during small excursions of the operating point, starting with changes of the active and reactive power then with a change of the load. The pole placement technique is used to impose the chosen dynamic behavior in sliding mode. Since the status variables used in the control are not always measurable, the use of a status observer is recommended in conjunction with the regulator. Two types of controls, the linear quadratic regulator with observer (O/LQR) control and the sliding mode with observer (O/SMC) control, are discussed and their performances are compared. Since stability is guaranteed by Lyapunov’s second law, the simulation of an electro-energetic system consisting of a synchronous machine linked to an infinite set of busbars, subjected to various disturbances, is used in order to confirm the robustness and prepotency of the sliding mode control with observer.
