A Study on the Driver’s Behavior Analysis of Intersection Access by Operating the Traffic Signal Countdown Timer

In this study, through a pilot operation of the traffic signal countdown timer(TSCT), the driver's intersection driving behaviour was analyzed regarding traffic safety according to operating the TSCT.In terms of traffic safety, the evaluation indicators such as signal violation rate, stop-line compliance rate, stop-line passing speed and standard deviation of speed were used for the effect analysis.Data were collected using a radar detector. As a result of the study, it was confirmed that the signal violation rate decreased as the remaining time was provided. This was also confirmed by the number of red-light camera installed on the pilot operation sites. However, the rate of stop-line compliance decreased, especially at the site where the red-light cameras was installed. In addition, it was analyzed that the access speed to the intersection increased, and the standard deviation of speed also increased. As a result of the effect analysis on the operation of the TSCT, it was confirmed that there were more negative than positive factors in traffic safety. In recent years, a navigation system that can receive real-time signal information through a connected car service has been developed. Therefore, it is necessary to be careful about introducing the TSCT when considering the result of effective analysis, cost-effectiveness and ITS development trend.
