The Longitudinal Effect of Family Relationship Satisfaction in Middle-Aged Adults on Positive Affectivity in The Elderly: An Application of Latent Growth Modeling with a Distance Variable

This study aimed to investigate longitudinal changes in family relationship satisfaction over time among middle-aged adults and to attempt to determine how the changes affect positive affectivity in the elderly. The data from the 5th to 9th (2010-2014 years) and 15th (2020 year) of the Korea Welfare Panel Study (KoWePS) were used for analysis through latent growth modeling with distance variables.Distance variables, gender, residential district, household income level, chronic diseases, and subjective health status were used. The number of panels was 870 middle-aged adults. The findings of this study were as follows: First, longitudinal changes in family relationship satisfaction among late middle-aged adults decreased year by year over time.Second, the higher the initial state of family relationship satisfaction among late middle-aged adults, the higher the state of positive affectivity in the elderly.Third, among distance variables, only the subjective health status had a positively significant effect on the state of positive affectivity in the elderly. In other words, it was found that the elderly who perceived that subjective health status was good would have a high positive affectivity. This study's findings were able to provide information on longitudinal changes in family relationship satisfaction among middleaged adults and the elderly, which has been limited in previous studies.
