Effect of Al content on microstructure and oxidation behavior of Si-Al co-deposition coatings on MoSiBTiC alloy

Si-Al co-deposition coatings were fabricated on 1st-generation MoSiBTiC alloy by pack cementation. The influence of Al content on the microstructure formation and oxidation behavior of the coatings was investigated experimentally. With the variation of Al content, the phase constitution, microstructure, thickness, and compactness of the coatings were significantly changed. An appropriate addition of Al in the pack enhances the oxidation resistance of MoSi 2 coating at 1300 ℃ due to the preferential oxidation of Al to form alumina, which can simultaneously fill up the cracks, thus preventing the inward diffusion of oxygen along the cracks to the substrate. • Si-Al co-deposition coatings were developed on 1st generation MoSiBTiC alloy. • Al content in the pack obviously affects the characteristics of the MoSi 2 coating. • C40 Mo(Si,Al) 2 coating transformed into C11 b MoSi 2 coating after oxidation. • 1Al coating showed enhanced oxidation resistance at 1300 ℃. • Cracks can be quickly filled by Al 2 O 3 due to the preferential oxidation of Al.
