Proposal for best practices in the candelilla wax extraction process in the Acatita Valley
After years dedicated to the harvesting of candelilla in northern Mexico, two critical factors remain unchanged: the use of sulfuric acid in the extraction process and the extreme poverty in which the inhabitants of the candelilla-producing areas live. These factors not only impact the well-being of the community but also pose serious health and safety risks for the workers. In response to this situation, a detailed analysis of occupational, health, and environmental risks is conducted, highlighting significant threats to both workers and the surrounding community. This article proposes a series of actions aimed at implementing best practices in the candelilla extraction process in the Valley of Acatita, located in the municipality of Francisco I. Madero, Mexico, with the goal of reducing the identified risks and promoting a safer, healthier, and more sustainable working environment.
