Simulation Analysis of Argon and Air Discharge Characteristics in a Large-Scale ICP Generator
In this paper, we focus on the Near-Space Plasma Electromagnetic Science Experimental Research Apparatus. Argon and air are utilized as working gases in the inductively coupled plasma (ICP) generator. Multiphysics coupling calculations are conducted using COMSOL to simulate the discharge states of argon and air under high-power and radio frequency conditions. We analyze the characteristics of temperature, velocity, enthalpy, and electron density for different gases under three-dimensional rotating inlet conditions, comparing the discharge characteristics between the two gases. The results indicate that different gases significantly affect the homogeneity and stability of the plasma. The plasma properties of argon formed at the outlet of the ICP generator are more concentrated and uniform. Although the enthalpy of the air discharge is higher, its electron density does not compare to that of argon plasma.
