Power Dispatch in Fast Charging Nanogrids: The Critical Role of Battery Degradation

The recent surge in electric vehicle (EV) adoption has introduced a dynamic landscape of challenges and opportunities in energy management for fast charging infrastructures. Efficiently harnessing renewable energy sources alongside battery storage is paramount to optimizing energy consumption and minimizing operational costs. Utilizing empirical data from an operational fast charging nanogrid, we developed an advanced mathematical model to evaluate the interplay between photovoltaic generation, grid integration, and battery storage. Our comprehensive analysis reveals that neglecting battery degradation costs significantly inflates total operational expenses. By incorporating degradation costs into the dispatch model, we demonstrate substantial improvements in both economic and operational efficiency. Validation with real-world data confirms significant cost reductions and performance enhancements when degradation costs are accounted for. This research highlights the imperative of integrating battery degradation considerations into energy management strategies, ensuring the sustainability and economic viability of EV charging infrastructures. The findings provide crucial insights for the future design and operation of sophisticated nanogrid systems, advocating for the broader adoption of renewable energy solutions in the expanding electric vehicle market.
