Alternative Low Voltage Cable Model for Transient Studies

This paper presents an alternative model for low-voltage (LV) cables, which is implemented in the Alternative Transients Program (ATP/ATPDraw) to support transient studies. The presented modeling strategy combines the Bergeron approach to implement a frequency-independent line model, including low pass filters to emulate cable attenuation, and if necessary, transient responses of voltage and current sensors used to measure transients in field applications. A step generator is also modeled to emulate a cable step response laboratory assembly in the ATP/ATPDraw environment. To validate the developed model, laboratory tests with real 6 mm2 LV cables with PVC insulation representing a two-conductor single-phase LV circuit are carried out. Comparisons between real and simulated circuits prove the accuracy of the developed model, highlighting its usefulness and revealing it as a promising model for transient studies in LV lines.
