Fault Detection and Classification in a Multiterminal HVDC Transmission System Using Discrete Wavelet Transform

In this paper, a study of fault detection and classification in HVDC transmission lines, using the Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) is present. The High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission lines allow a large amount of energy generation in several locations to be supplied to distant points in the electrical system where there is a high demand for power. This need can be met with the use of multiterminal HVDC (MTDC) systems. Due to the high fault currents that can be reached in these MTDC systems, effective protection schemes with fast action and selectivity are necessary. For this purpose, the analyses are developed through simulation in Matlab/Simulink, and it is attested that with the algorithm proposed in the detection and classification analysis, respectively, the protection is quickly ensured with 98.07% accuracy, and it allows the identification of 100% of the poles involved in the faults.
