On Evaluating Series Capacitor Bank Protection

This paper deals with the evaluation of series capacitor bank protection applied to transmission lines. To do so, a series-compensated double-circuit transmission line, modeled in Alternative Transients Program (ATP), was evaluated by means of sensitivity and transient analyses. The results reveal how series-capacitor bank protection can bypass the capacitor banks under some fault scenarios, in such a way that this dynamic behavior must be accounted by protection engineers when setting relay parameters.

Abstract

This paper deals with the evaluation of series capacitor bank protection applied to transmission lines. To do so, a series-compensated double-circuit transmission line, modeled in Alternative Transients Program (ATP), was evaluated by means of sensitivity and transient analyses. The results reveal how series-capacitor bank protection can bypass the capacitor banks under some fault scenarios, in such a way that this dynamic behavior must be accounted by protection engineers when setting relay parameters.
