Children's literature has an important position in the personal development of the child's feelings, thoughts and interests and in the acquisition of reading habits through works that deal with childhood. In terms of the language used in children's literature and the themes chosen, the concept of “being suitable for children” is a prominent phenomenon. One of the elements within the concept of relevance to the child, which is underlined within the framework of this phenomenon, is the way gender roles are handled and presented in works of children's literature. Because children's literature plays an important role in shaping gender roles. Translations, on the other hand, enable the transfer of these roles across cultures. The aim of this study is to emphasize that in translating gender roles in works of children's literature, the translator assumes the role of a cultural mediator beyond being a translator between languages and to draw attention to the need to make conscious choices by considering gender equality while translating. By examining sample translations made with artificial intelligence tools in addition to human translation, it is also aimed to enlighten issues such as how the translator can benefit from prompt engineering and how he/she can carry gender perception to the right places with his/her translations within the scope of children's literature. The works selected as the sample in the study are the children's literature series Mr. Men and Little Miss by Roger Hargreaves; the target texts translated by Canan Bolel under the title Küçük Bay ve Bayanlar were published by Doğan Egmont Publishing House. From a methodological point of view, the translations made with the artificial intelligence tool Google Gemini 1.5 Pro were analyzed with the descriptive method. The descriptions were based on the concepts of “acceptable” translation and “adequate” translation put forward by Gideon Toury in the context of the translator's antecedent norms, which are included in the theoretical framework and ensure that the study proceeds in a targeted manner on solid foundations. According to the findings, it has been observed that AI translations created using prompt engineering have shown promising results in reducing gender bias and using a more neutral language. The study emphasized the importance of translators and AI systems using conscious strategies in the translation process.
