A Study on the Reduction of the Use of Disposable Nail Products for the Sustainability of the Beauty Industry

This study attempted to consider the sustainability of the beauty industry and seek ways to reduce the use of nail disposable products. To this end, in-depth interviews were conducted with literature studies on environmental consciousness, sustainability, nail industry and environment in the beauty industry, and 13 beauty experts. Based on the results, a reduction in the use of nail disposable products and alternative measures were suggested. First, in order to reduce the use of nail disposable products, measures to activate the use of alternative products, reuse and recycling, improve disinfection equipment used in nail shops, and activate refill products were suggested. In addition, the waste collection service and empty bottle collection service of nail shops, and the individual product keeping system should be activated. Second, it is necessary to develop eco-friendly nail products and improve the containers of existing products. Third, education, institutional support, and active public relations strategies are needed as measures to improve environmental consciousness. This study is meaningful in that it is used as basic data to raise environmental consciousness in the beauty industry and achieve sustainable development by devising measures to reduce the use of nail disposable products.
