Some Turkish and Mongolian Terms in the Timurid Section of Muʿīn al-Dīn Natanzī’s Muntakhab al-Tavārīkh-i Muʿīnī
The Timurid period (1370-1506) is the last phase of medieval Persian historiography. During this period, many historians wrote history books. One of them was Muʿīn al-Dīn Natanzī, who initially wrote a general history under the patronage of Mirza Iskandar, the ruler of Fars. Natanzī later updated his work in accordance with the changing political circumstances and dedicated it to Mirza Shahrukh. Natanzī’s Muntakhab al-Tavārīkh-i Muʿīnī has been the center of attention of researchers since the early 19th century. What is striking in this work is the originality of the narratives in the Golden Horde and Timurid accounts. On the other hand, it contains more Turkish and Mongolian words than its contemporaries. Based on this, István Vásáry recently analyzed some Turkish and Mongolian words in the Golden Horde section of Muntakhab al-Tavārīkh-i Muʿīnī. However, the Timurid section of the work is richer in Turkish and Mongolian terms. In this respect, this study analyzes some Turkish and Mongolian words in the Timurid section of Natanzī’s work. First of all, the situation of Mirza Iskandar in the Fars region after Timur’s death, under Natanzī’s patronage, is described. Then the content and sources of the aforementioned work are analyzed. Finally, some Turkish and Mongolian words in the Timurid section of the work are identified. After the meaning of the terms is given, the sentence of the term in the text is quoted as an example.
