Sexualidade, alzheimer e terceira idade – perspetivas dos cuidadores
This study investigated Sexuality and Alzheimer's in Old Age, aiming to compare the perspectives of formal and informal caregivers of people with Alzheimer's regarding sexuality and its impact on family and community. A quantitative and qualitative methodology was used, with surveys conducted on 344 caregivers (172 formal and 172 informal), of both genders, aged between 18 and 73. Results indicate that caregivers recognize the importance of sexuality in old age. However, due to a lack of information about Alzheimer's, some affectionate contacts may be misinterpreted as sexual, potentially facilitating harassment or abuse. The disease requires closer surveillance, fostering insecurity within the community, which may lead to institutionalization and medication administration. The sample also shows that hypersexuality or fear of abuse can affect the social and family life of people with Alzheimer's. Nonetheless, caregivers do not believe that affectionate contact should be prevented in the final stages of life. The study concludes that there is an urgent need for ongoing education and training for caregivers and the community to demystify prejudice and prevent negative outcomes. These findings may serve as a foundation for future research and justify implementing new strategies to defend human rights in old age, particularly in the context of Alzheimer's disease.
