Remembering Prof. Girish Sahni: A Visionary Scientist and Pioneer in Biotechnology
Prof. Girish Sahni Prof. Girish Sahni, a pioneer in the field of biotechnology and former Director General of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), passed away on 19th August 2024, at the age of 68 years. His untimely demise, reportedly from a heart attack, has left a deep void in the Indian scientific community, especially in the realms of bioscience and biotechnology, where his contributions were unparalleled. Dr. Sahni was an extraordinary scientist whose work revolutionised the field of protein-based cardiovascular drugs. His pioneering efforts in developing indigenous ‘clot buster’ drugs, such as natural streptokinase and recombinant streptokinase, stand as a testament to his brilliance. These drugs, marketed under various brand names such as STPase, Klotbuster and LupiFlo, became life-saving therapeutics for patients suffering from blood clots. Notably, he was also behind the development of clot-specific streptokinase, India’s first biotherapeutic molecule licensed internationally in 2006. This accomplishment placed Indian biotechnology on the global map. Born on 2nd March 1956, Dr. Sahni’s academic journey began with a Ph.D. from the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru. His post-doctoral research took him to prestigious institutions like the University of California, Santa Barbara and Rockefeller University, New York. His illustrious scientific career led him to join the CSIR Institute of Microbial Technology (IMTECH) in Chandigarh in 1991. Dr. Sahani developed a unique biochemistry research laboratory at IMTECH, which is still considered one of the best research laboratories in this country. ‘Clot bluster’ drug is one of the many products that came out of his laboratory. He always believed in bench-to-bedside work. Very few scientists in our country could claim such successful translation research like him. ‘Sahani’s Laboratory’ at IMTECH was the most sought-after place for doctoral and post-doctoral students. He even provided guidance for research to many students who failed to join him directly. Dr. Sahani served as the Director of IMTECH from 2005 to 2015, before his appointment as the Director General of CSIR from 2015 to 2018. While at the helm of IMTECH and CSIR, his aim was to provide importance on applied research so that humanity can get the benefit directly. Even after his retirement, Dr. Sahni continued to mentor young scientists, inspiring the next generation of researchers with his knowledge and passion for innovation. As a leader, Dr. Sahni was known for his vision and commitment to translating scientific research into real-world solutions. His colleagues fondly remember him as a ‘terrific translational scientist’ whose work on clot-dissolving therapies has had a lasting impact. He was not only a brilliant scientist but also a strategic thinker who recognised the importance of connecting scientific research with industry to generate meaningful societal benefits. Dr. Sahni believed in the potential of Indian scientists and worked tirelessly to make CSIR a hub of innovation despite facing significant financial challenges during his tenure. Besides his contribution in science, he was a great human being. Students used to mix with him like elder brother. He took care for their every need. During the 91st Indian Science Congress in 2004 at Chandigarh, he played an important role to motivate the school and college students for research. Dr. Sahni’s contributions to science were recognised through numerous awards and honours. He was a fellow of India’s three major science academies and received accolades such as the National Biotechnology Product Development Award (2002), the CSIR Technology Shield (2001–2002) and the Vigyan Rattan Award (2014), amongst others. His legacy as a biotechnologist who championed the cause of indigenous research and technology transfer will continue to inspire future generations.[1-3] The passing away of Dr. Girish Sahni is a profound loss to the global scientific community, but his legacy will live on through the life-saving technologies he helped to create and the countless scientists he mentored.
