Systematic review of classroom climate and its influence on english language achievement

This systematic review examines the relationship between classroom climate and English language achievement across primary and secondary education settings. Classroom climate is defined as the multifaceted interactions within the classroom that shape students’ academic, social, and emotional experiences, profoundly influencing their learning outcomes. This review includes a comprehensive analysis of empirical studies spanning 2000 to 2024, sourced from a wide range of educational databases to ensure a robust and diverse sample. The findings reveal that positive classroom climates, characterized by supportive teacher–student interactions, clear expectations, organized instructional strategies, and emotionally secure environments, are strongly associated with higher English language achievement and enhanced overall student performance The review highlights the pivotal role of effective instructional practices, such as collaborative learning, differentiated instruction, and structured teaching, in fostering positive classroom dynamics. It also explores the interplay between classroom climate and key factors, including students’ motivation, self-regulation, and confidence in using English, emphasizing the need to create environments where students feel empowered to actively participate in the learning process. Methodological limitations, including the lack of longitudinal studies and insufficient research addressing diverse socio-economic contexts, are identified as significant gaps in the current literature. These gaps underscore the pressing need for culturally sensitive, context-specific, and longitudinal research to better understand the nuanced relationship between classroom climate and English achievement. This review proposes actionable recommendations for future research and interventions aimed at optimizing English language outcomes by improving classroom climates. The insights offered here are invaluable for educators and policymakers committed to enhancing language acquisition in diverse educational contexts.
