Modification of calibration procedure to provide more accurate density measurement

This work was carried out previously to study effectiveness of the calibration methodology through a joint industry project (JIP). In this JIP, a comprehensive examination of the calibration process for a Mobrey 7835 liquid densitometer, a crucial device for density measurement in the energy industry was conducted. Using the TÜV SÜD – National Engineering Laboratory (NEL) Industrial Densitometer Calibration Facility and two accurately characterised transfer standard fluids, iso-octane and sebacate, the research aims to evaluate if the calibration procedures are fit for purpose and directly linked to National Standards for high temperatures and pressures. Results indicate significant deviations in density measurements under varying temperatures and pressures, underscoring the importance of calibrating densitometers at their anticipated operating conditions. Recommendations include calibrating densitometers using transfer standard fluids at specific conditions and ensuring calibration facilities can maintain precise temperature and pressure levels. This approach aims to reduce measurement uncertainties and enhance the reliability of densitometer performance, contributing significantly to the accuracy of mass flow measurements in the energy sector.
