TaS2 nanosheets embedded in a polymer ionomer catalyzing hydrogen evolution reaction

With the goal to make sustainable hydrogen production, we studied the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) at a platinum group metal-free system based on nanosheets of transition metal dichalcogenide TaS 2 embedded in a polymer ionomer. The polymer ionomer binder has a decisive role in the functionality of the catalytic layer. Different catalytic layers were prepared by varying the ratio between Nafion ionomer and the TaS 2 nanosheet. Morphology studies showed that there is a homogenous distribution of the nanosheet catalyst when the weight ratio of the catalyst versus the Nafion content, of the composite, is around 40%. Electrochemical characterizations elucidate that the optimum ratio is 40% as this electrode composite provides the highest current levels at low voltages of all examined samples. • The optimum incorporation of TaS 2 can lead to high performing electrode. • The proper electrode can result in lowering the overpotential for HER. • The optimum mixture ratio can improve the transportation of protons and electrons.
