An Interdisciplinary Model for International Education Exchange: Integrating Critical Global Citizenship and English as a Lingua Franca

The increasing prominence of global interdependence has led to a growing recognition of the importance of fostering citizenship qualities through global citizenship education (GCED) through international education exchange programs. While these programs have enhanced communication skills and facilitated cultural exchange, their potential to cultivate a critical awareness of global inequalities and social justice remains largely untapped. This study proposes an international education exchange program model that integrates critical GCED and English as a Lingua Franca (ELF). By exploring shared historical experiences of colonization of Korea and the Philippines, and using Andreotti’s (2021) layering methodologies, the current education exchange program aims to deepen students’ cognitive, emotional, and relational engagement with complex global issues. While strides have been made in promoting intercultural understanding and language proficiency, further efforts are essential to harness the full potential of these exchanges as platforms for critical global citizenship education, thereby contributing to individual growth and the advancement of global justice and solidarity.
