Completing Dried Coconut Value Chain of Vietnam Towards Sustainable Development Goals

Objective: This article’s objective is to analyse the coconut value chain of Ben Tre province, one of the strongest agricultural centres of Vietnam. Theoretical framework: This article’s theoretical framework is primarily based on theories of value chain and product lines offered by GTZ international development agency (GTZ, 2007). Methods: For the purpose of research, various quantitative and qualitative methods were used, including added value analysis serving as a general indicator for the whole coconut value chain (FAO, 2005). Results and Implications: The results allow us to draw conclusions about the role of coconut value chain for the local economy as it generates income not only for the main participants (coconut growers, collectors, and processors) but also for the intermediaries (coconut suppliers, market information services, banks, trade associations and promotion agencies, authorities, and research centres). However, the income of coconut growers has actually decreased, reducing the quality and productivity. Therefore, there is a dire necessity to reasonably organise production processes within coconut value chain in a sustainable manner through three pillars: economy, society, and environment (AjMal Abdulsamad, 2016). Originality/Value: This article’s pioneering research method used and results obtained could serve as a basis for developing similar studies for other agricultural productions and value chains in other provinces of the South West of Vietnam.
