Dynamic Adaptation of the Modulation in a LoRa Channel According to the Link Quality
The Longe Range Wide Area Network (Lo-RaW AN) is an LPWAN technology designed for Internet of Things (IoT) communication across thousands of objects in a wide-area network with low battery power consumption. The Adaptive Data Rate (ADR) algorithm is a LoRaWAN mechanism for configuring transmission parameters at nodes, with the aim of improving communication quality between nodes and gateways. ADR is a mechanism in Lo-RaWAN that dynamically adjusts transmission parameters such as spreading factor and transmission power according to network conditions to optimize data transmission and battery efficiency. In case of channel noise and a large number of nodes, applying the standard ADR algorithm results in a significant reduction in packet delivery rate. The aim of this paper is to propose an improved version of this algorithm that dynamically configures transmission parameters. The focus will be on the spreading factor and transmit power of nodes in LoRaWAN networks. In the proposed algorithm, the synchronized variation of node transmission power and spreading factor is used as a basis for taking channel conditions into account when configuring transmission parameters. The use of this variation with the implementation of new parameters enables the proposed algorithm to perform well. An evaluation between the standard and the improved algorithms is carried out to see the impact of the solution on the data extraction rate. The obtained results shown that the proposed algorithm outperforms the standard one according to the packet delivery rate and the spreading factor distribution.
