PI-Sliding Mode Control on a Hydraulic Dynamometer Test Bed
A driving environment simulator is an essential system required to develop an electric vehicle. Motor loading test equipment or dynamometers can be used to create driving environment simulators. One common type of dynamometer takes the form of a hydraulic system. In this setup, modifications to the dynamometer loading represent the road resistance. This system, called the Hydraulic Dynamometer Test Bed (HDTB), controls the load change of the motor under test. The controller on the dynamometer is designed to adjust the hydraulic pressure to correspond to road resistance. The hydraulic dynamometer model was developed using an identification system approach involving analyzing non-linear constraints. The torque output and valve opening input data of the dynamometer hydraulic pressure regulator are designed for the model plant. The dynamometer is controlled using the Proportional IntegralSliding Mode Control (PI-SMC) approach to assess and enhance the system’s desired set point accurately. The PI-SMC controller has also been compared with the PID controller to see the improvement of the system response. Implementing the PI-SMC controller on the HDTB increased rise time response performance by $\mathbf{3 0. 7 1 \%}$ compared to using a PID controller.
