An Extension of Simulating Spanning Tree Protocols in a Dual Landing Station Cable-Based Tsunameter with Multiple Ocean Bottom Units

Critical networks require some redundancies for their operation. This also applies to INA-CBT, the Indonesia’s cable-based tsunameter. The currently deployed INA-CBT was designed for one landing station (LS) and several ocean-bottom units (OBUs). A prospective way to add extra redundancy is to utilize another LS as a gateway to another data path to the central station. However, this extra LS will cause various spanning tree variations at switching layers. It is important to assess this impact on failover and failback convergence time for ensuring it within the required specification of INA-CBT. This paper aims to investigate the impact of having dual LS to the spanning tree configurations of STP and RSTP protocols in the INA-CBT’s OBU to LS segment by means of simulation using Omnet++. Simulation results in both mesh and ring physical topologies under some possible incident scenarios show that failover and failback time achieved meet the requirements.
