Mindfulness, a possibility of alternative therapy against stress
The article *"Utility of mindfulness in managing anxiety, stress, and quality of life in infertile patients"* 1 examines the effect of mindfulness on anxiety, stress, and quality of life in infertile women. The intervention lasted eight weeks. The results are promising regarding the issues addressed: mindfulness reduced stress in women undergoing infertility treatment, which, in turn, improved their quality of life.Although the sample size was small (37 women in Mexico), the positive outcome suggests the potential for extending this approach to other geographic regions. The medical literature reviewed indicates that mindfulness can reduce stress associated with various illnesses, not just infertility. For example, it has shown benefits for cancer patients. 2,3Mindfulness, rooted in Tibetan Buddhism, focuses on meditation through breathing and body scanning. This approach has demonstrated positive effects on health and symptom reduction in diseases. As it is meditation-based, mindfulness complements other therapeutic strategies and can enhance stress reduction, fostering comprehensive health improvements. 4e believe that studies like this one can expand the application and investigation of mindfulness as an adjunct therapy for numerous diseases.Additionally, another study observed a significant correlation between mindfulness and burnout among mental health professionals, 5 for whom it could be a viable treatment option. Thus, these techniques demonstrate broad potential benefits for various groups and conditions.
