The list of streets of the city of Chişinău in 1851
Historical documents preserve the names of several streets, squares, sectors, etc. of Chisinau from the period up to the annexation in 1812 of the eastern part of the Principality of Moldova by the Russian Empire. However, no documents have been identified that would contain a list of them. The oldest complete list of the city’s main urban toponyms is dated 1851, containing the names of 95 streets and lanes, which formed 269 quarters. The total number of churches, state institutions, educational institutions, markets, barriers, bridges, as well as the adjacent suburbs existing at that time were indicated for each of the four Sectors of the city. In total, the presence in Chisinau of 12 churches, 35 state and educational institutions, 11 squares, 10 barriers, 7 bridges, 5 suburbs and their names were been enumerated. The mentioned list represents an important document for the history of the toponymy of the city of Chisinau. It marks a specific stage in its history, related to the renaming of a significant part of the city’s streets formed before 1812. It also recovers a page of the toponymic identity of Chisinau.
