Influence of Tool’s Thermal Conductivity on Milling with Ultrasound

Machining of polycarbonate workpieces with ultrasonic modification of the force is considered. Milling with different values of the mill’s thermal conductivity and the cutting speed—including milling in the presence of ultrasound—is analyzed by means of numerical modeling. When the thermal conductivity increases, the temperature decrease in the mill–chip and mill–workpiece contact zones is greater when milling polycarbonate workpieces than when milling steel. The presence of ultrasound lowers the main component of the cutting force and the temperature in the mill–chip and mill–workpiece contact zones. In machining steel, the temperature in the surface layers falls significantly. In the contact zones, the temperature declines more with increase in cutting speed.
