Spinal Cord Injury: New Concepts in Understanding the Work of Epidural Stimulants and Other Modern Treatment Methods

Spinal cord injury is a serious condition that hundreds of thousands of people around the world face every year. Currently, there are many approaches to the treatment of patients with spinal cord injury, one of which is the method of epidural stimulation of the spinal cord. Many clinical and preclinical studies have shown encouraging results when using an epidural stimulator as a means of restoring locomotion after spinal cord injury. In addition, in recent years, the positive effect of epidural stimulation has been noted on other organ systems whose functions are impaired as a result of spinal cord injury. Other modern methods of treating patients with spinal cord injury based on the principles of optogenetics, neuronal stem cell transplantation, pharmacotherapy and the use of magnetic stimulation are also considered.
