FATORES ASSOCIADOS À MORTALIDADE DE INDIVÍDUOS COM COVID-19 EM UNIDADES DE TERAPIA INTENSIVA DE HOSPITAL DE REFERÊNCIA NO NORDESTE: ESTUDO TRANSVERSAL
Introduction: The factors that influence the mortality of individuals who evolved to the severe form of the disease caused by the coronavirus (COVID-19) need to be better elucidated, seeing that they have high mortality rates. Objective: Analyzing the factors associated with adult and elderly mortality in a public referral hospital for the treatment of COVID-19. Methods: Cross-sectional study, with adults and elderly people from April to July 2020 in a COVID-19 control center, which exclusively serves the SUS, in northeast of Brazil. The data were collected through management records and organized in an exclusive database for research. The result of interest was mortality and its relationship with comorbidities and factors related to hospitalization and the use of mechanical ventilation. It was performed an inferential analysis in order to assess the association between death and comorbidities, in addition to multivariate analysis. It was considered p ≤ 0.05. Results: It was analyzed 320 patients, of which 172 (53.8%) were female, and mortality rate was 43.4%. Arterial hypertension and diabetes were the most frequent comorbidities. Advanced age, kidney disease, SAPS, use of hemodialysis in the ICU, use of mechanical ventilation and PaO2/FiO2 ratio were the variables associated with a higher risk of death. The use of mechanical ventilation increased the risk of death in the ICU by 10 times. Conclusion: in adults and elderly people with COVID-19 in intensive care, factors such as advanced age, kidney disease, high SAPS, need for hemodialysis, use of mechanical ventilation and the PaO2/FiO2 ratio were associated with a higher risk of death.
