Experimental Stiffness Comparison of Various Types of Flexure Hinges
Flexible hinges are components that connect two pivots and allow linear deformation within the elastic range of the constituent materials. These hinges enable highly accurate positioning and are widely used in high-precision manufacturing industries. The hinges have various types, including leaf, notch, cartwheel, and cross axis. Their characteristics are varied by both the type and the manufacturing method. This study designs and evaluates the rotational stiffness of the various flexible hinges through mathematical modeling, finite element analysis, and experimental testing. The aim of this study is to compare the stiffness of each type to determine the most suitable hinge design for high-precision applications. The cartwheel hinge is suitable if high stiffness is required. However, if a wide range of rotation is preferred, leaf or cross axis hinges are recommended.<br/>However, cross axis hinges require careful fabrication. Hence, the comprehensive analysis results provide valuable guidance for selecting appropriate hinge designs.
