Analysis of Middle School Korean Sentence Patterns for ‘Subject-adapted Korean’ of KSL Curriculum: Focused on Middle School Social Studies Education Contents
This study aims to explore the ‘subject-specific sentence patterns’ of ‘subject-adapted Korean’presented in the Korean Language Curriculum (2017) by identifying and analyzing the expression patterns found in social studies textbooks. The research focused on the “Everyday Life and Law” unit of eight different certified Middle School Social Studies 1 textbooks. The text from this unit was treated as a corpus, from which expression patterns were extracted. These patterns were then analyzed based on their level according to ‘the Study on the Application of the International Standard Korean Language Curriculum (2017)’, as well as their frequency of occurrence. Additionally, examples were provided for how the analysis results can be applied in an educational context. The study revealed the followings: First, upon reviewing the difficulty level of the extracted expression patterns, it was found that expressions of level 5 or above were rarely present, whereas expressions of levels 1-3 appeared frequently. Second, out of the 75 expression patterns identified, the top 23 patterns in terms of usage frequency accounted for more than 80% of total occurrences. Learning these patterns would enable effective understanding of the unit text. Third, the highest frequency expressions can serve as reference materials when defining ‘subject-specific sentence patterns’ in social studies. This research provides ways to utilize frequently occurring expression patterns from textbooks in ‘Subject-adapted Korean’ classes. Furthermore, it holds significance as a resource for future studies aiming to identify ‘subject-specific’ sentence patterns.
