A Study on Transition Process of the Form and Function of Audio Materials in Korean Textbooks: Focusing on Textbooks from University-affiliated Institutions

The purpose of this paper is to examine the history of the form and function of audio materials in Korean language textbooks for foreign learners. 78 textbooks of 12 types from three language education institutions were analyzed using a checklist. The analyzed data were stored and managed in Excel. The form of auditory materials has changed from analog to digital and from offline to online according to language teaching approaches, and the development of technology and media. On the other hand, their function was consistent with sound input. Even when new attempts were made, they were either regressed to the past or limited to a specific level. Above all, the audio materials of the latest textbooks were provided as the form of a QR code, but did not function as a multimedia. Pedagogical applications were suggested in regard of utilizing audiovisual use. One was to use the current platform as it is but utilize visual elements, and the other was to expand into a metaverse classroom. Educational effects were expected in cognitive and affective aspects. In this paper, the use of educational materials, which has been a peripheral topic in textbook research, was discussed. Auditory data that has not been received much attention, was analyzed and improvement measures were presented.
