In one of his monographs, the Belarusian researcher Adam Malʹdzis characterised these texts as Belarusian, but in a description of the manuscript in a Polish reference book they appear as ruskie ‘Ruthenian’. The analysis of phonetic, grammatical and lexical features has shown that the texts under study could have been created in the south-western part of modern Belarus. However, it cannot be excluded that they originated in the north-west of modern Ukraine or in the neighbouring regions of Poland. This allows us to argue that the analysed texts were created in one of the territorial varieties of the language of the East Slavic population of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

Abstract

Two Little-Known Texts Written in the Latin Alphabet in an Eighteenth-Century Manuscript: An Attempt at Locating Them in the Dialectal Landscape of the Eastern Part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth The article analyses a number of linguistic features of two little-known texts in the Latin alphabet under the conventional titles Krasnaia u Pani Uroda and Myleyka Swoho podkała, which are contained in an eighteenth-century manuscript from the collection of the Warsaw University Library.
